Emily's actions
Plastics 101
Read Plastic-Free Challenge emails
I will read through the three emails each week to learn more about plastic and get ideas on how to use less.
At Home
Shop Used
I will buy secondhand goods to reduce the demand for new plastic products and avoid packaging.
At Home
Plastic-Free Caffeine Routine
I will cut single-use plastics out of my morning drink by switching to reusable coffee pods, tea infusers, and bulk beans or tea leaves.
Food
Stop Buying Water
I will stop buying water and instead use water from the tap or invest in a water filter if water quality is a concern.
Plastics 101
Avoid Harmful Plastics
I will avoid buying toxic plastics, including polyvinyl, polystyrene and polycarbonate (#3,#6 and #7).
On-the-go
Use Reusable Water Bottles
I will use a reusable bottle and stop purchasing bottled water, saving 3 disposable plastic bottle(s) a day.
Personal Care
Have Waste-Free Periods
I will use a menstrual cup and/or cloth pads instead of a disposable option.
Personal Care
Say no to “Flushable wipes”
Wipes don't break down in sewer systems, but create massive clogs. I will find alternatives to using disposable wipes.
Food
Ditch the Baggie
I will ditch the zippered plastic bags for food storage and switch to reusable containers.
Food
Skip Single-Use Plastic for Freezing Food
I will use reusable containers when freezing food and opt for glass or metal when purchasing new containers.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

REFLECTION QUESTIONFoodHow easy or difficult have you found this task? Is there a way you could rearrange your freezer to make this work better?
Emily Angstman 2/11/2025 8:45 AMPersonally, I have found this task to be easy as I live alone and luckily have the room to store reusable items in my freezer. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONPlastics 101Do some research on polystyrene and polyvinyl. How many items in your house already contain these toxins?
-
REFLECTION QUESTIONFoodWhat are the hardest scenarios for you to avoid using bottled water? How have you been able to avoid purchasing water in these situations?
Emily Angstman 2/03/2025 10:00 AMThe hardest scenarios are at sporting events or concerts where I cannot bring in a reusable water bottle. I try to avoid purchasing water in these situations by drinking water before or drinking something other than a plastic container. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAt HomeWhat kinds of items have been easy for you to find used? What has been hard?
Emily Angstman 2/03/2025 9:51 AMThe things that are easy to find used are clothes, bag, plates, books, etc. The things that are hard to find are apartment decor, frames, and/or shoes.
