Katherine's actions
Plastics 101
Complete a waste audit
I will spend 10 minutes conducting a waste audit- including recyclables and compost- to understand how much plastic waste I create and where I can reduce the most.
Personal Care
Choose sustainable suds
I will replace my soaps, shampoos, conditioners, and lotions with solid bars or refillable options.
Community
Pick Up Plastic Litter
I will pick up 1 piece(s) of plastic litter each day and dispose of it responsibly.
At Home
Plan a Garden
I will plan an herb or vegetable garden for next year at my home, workplace, or community garden.
Community
REDUCE MY MILES DRIVEN
I will cut down the miles I drive to reduce microplastic shedding from tires. Alternatives include riding public transit, walking, biking, carpooling and combining trips.
Plastics 101
Learn about Local Plastics Recycling
Plastics recycling is real, and it works in the Twin Cities metro area when done correctly. I will spend 60 minutes learning about how to correctly recycle plastics in the Twin Cities and where recycled plastics end up.
Plastics 101
Estimate Your Plastic Footprint
I will complete a plastic consumption calculator to learn about my plastic footprint.
Food
Make Your Own
I will try a new recipe or food preparation method, such as canning, pickling, making yogurt, or baking granola bars or bread.
On-the-go
Pack a Lunch
I will skip eating out and bring a lunch from home in reusable containers.
On-the-go
Assemble a Zero Waste Kit
I will assemble and/or use a to-go bag with cloth napkins and reusable utensils, containers, and cups to avoid disposable to-go containers and cutlery for 1 of my household members.

Katherine Boyce 2/28/2026 10:43 AMTo close out the challenge, I started planning a garden and I made homemade tortillas, which level up taco night 10x with very little effort. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAt HomeBesides having access to fresh herbs and vegetables, what benefits will you see from growing your own garden?
Katherine Boyce 2/28/2026 10:30 AMIt's a great way to befriend neighbors. Last year, our neighbors shared an abundance of produce from their Dowling Community Garden plot. We hope to produce enough to share this year! -
Katherine Boyce 2/27/2026 9:55 AMPicked up lots of litter in an old bread bag on my way to the train today. -
Katherine Boyce 2/26/2026 7:51 PMI appreciate that reducing miles driven to cut down on tire pollution (not to mention break dust and emissions) is included in this challenge. It's good to raise awareness of the many benefits of driving less.-

REFLECTION QUESTIONOn-the-goWhat items do you keep in your kit? What steps have you taken to help make this a habit and remember to bring your kit with you?
Katherine Boyce 2/26/2026 11:28 AMThis is the one daily action I really didn't turn into a strong habit yet, so I'll keep working on it. I want to have a clean, empty takeout container, some reusable cutlery, maybe a microwave-safe dish, and maybe a mug. I've found myself in a couple of situations where I needed to unexpectedly get food on the go, but I didn't have a kit handy.-
Katherine Boyce 2/26/2026 7:55 PMI was thinking of that, Bonnie, only on any given day I might drive, take transit, or bike! So I think I need to assemble a fairly compact kit. -

REFLECTION QUESTIONOn-the-goWhat are some of the unexpected benefits of bringing your own lunch?
Katherine Boyce 2/26/2026 11:26 AMI don't have to go find food somewhere else and I avoid unnecessary takeout containers or food waste. Win win win. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunityWhat do you enjoy about active transportation? What has been difficult?
Katherine Boyce 2/25/2026 11:13 AMI'm a big believer in transit, walking, and biking, and I'm proud of the ways Minnesota has invested in active transportation—but we still have a long way to go to make it accessible and appealing for more people to use it. It often takes me an hour or more longer than if I were driving, which is a cost many people can't afford. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONPlastics 101What did you learn about how to correctly recycle plastics in the Twin Cities and where recycled plastics end up? What did or didn't surprise you?
Katherine Boyce 2/25/2026 11:03 AMThe provided tab was helpful for the basics of accepted recycling; however, I'd like to do further research on what happens with edge cases. What happens to caps or lids that fall off? What happens to store-drop-off plastic film? What happens to items that are put in the recycling bins by mistake? -
Katherine Boyce 2/25/2026 10:49 AMI ordered some Blueland foaming hand soap tablets today, I'm eager to see how they work. I already had some leftover foaming hand soap dispensers that I'll use. -
Katherine Boyce 2/24/2026 2:34 PMWow. I traveled to Arizona for a few days and all my plastic-free goals became impossible... I hadn't realized how lucky we are in Minnesota and in the Twin Cities in particular to have so many more options to avoid single-use plastics and to recycle more of what we can't avoid...-
Katherine Boyce 2/25/2026 9:48 AM -
Layl McDill 2/24/2026 7:50 PMI agree- every time I travel I have to remind myself that you will get everything in styrofoam and plastic if you aren't watching!
