Yesterday I posted about how proud I was that I put all of my reusable to-go containers in the dishwasher so that I could assemble my Zero-waste kit. Then last night we went out to eat while my containers were still sitting in the dishwasher and they gave me a Styrofoam to-go box. UUGGGHHHH!!! Super fail!

What might you do differently since learning about bio-based, biodegradable and compostable plastic?

I'm going to be a little bit more cognizant of bio-based plastics. If a plastic isn't readily compostable or recyclable, it's not much better if it just ends up in a landfill.

Besides having access to fresh herbs and vegetables, what benefits will you see from growing your own garden?

There are so many herbs that I would love to have right outside my door: cilantro, thyme, basil, mint, parsley, and chives. I think it will be fun to experiment with fresh flavors in old and new recipes. It will also be nice to get outside more and force myself to tend to the overgrown lily/fern patch that is my "garden" right now. More Vitamin D, more active time, and a garden project that will start smaller this year.

What items do you keep in your kit? What steps have you taken to help make this a habit and remember to bring your kit with you?

Ok, here's the thing... I keep collapsible containers in my car for leftovers, including a collapsible cup (I keep utensils in my purse already) and most of the time I forget to bring them into restaurants. Most of the time we are too impatient and exhausted to run back out to get them because we are attempting to wrangle our 3 yr old out before his internal meltdown timer goes off! So, yesterday I took all the grimy, sandy containers back out of my car, threw them in the dishwasher, and then I'm going to put them in a cute little bag that I will WANT to grab to bring inside with me. That's my new plan :)

I went to Lunds/Byerlys the other day with our reusable bags. The nice young man that was bagging the groceries went to put some things in a plastic bag anyway (in case they leaked) and I stopped him. But as I was walking away, I was sad to see him rip up the plastic bag that he'd grabbed and throw it in the trash :(

I made a cleaner that had vinegar, dish soap, and water for our shower walls to get rid of soap scum. It really worked! The biggest problem was that I didn't make enough and then ran out of vinegar :P

I like that I can add things to supplement our son's lunch. I can throw in some protein powder, sneak in vegetables like avocado or spinach, and I can use bananas without needing preservatives.

Yesterday I visited Tare Market for their special sale and refilled my soy sauce bottle, pearled farro, and dishwasher detergent. I also noted that they have bulk toasted sesame oil, apple cider vinegar, red wine vinegar, and laundry detergent sheets for when I run out. I love going there and seeing what new things they carry! If you haven't been there, do check it out sometime!

I actually really enjoy cooking. I like trying new recipes, I like trying new flavors, I like trying to eat healthy while still enjoying what I'm eating. I like knowing what's in my food and why it's there. As I've tried to pay more and more attention to labels lately, I've noticed a lot of extra fillers in otherwise healthy foods (ex. guar gum in yogurt). In the past I've tried making homemade yogurt, which I've loved but just don't have a lot of time for right now. This time I'm making the mix-ins part, which is much like making jam/preserves. I'm trying to get the fruit/sugar ratio to the point where my preschooler will eat it. Work in progress :)
