Katherine Boyce 2/12/2026 8:00 AMThis is a great way to think about it! Each piece picked up is one less hazard for other species!

Food
Use Mason Jars for leftover storage
We wanted to stop using plastic to store food and now use wide-mouth mason jars and love it! You can see what food is being stored and the jars clean up great in the dishwasher. Unlike plastic containers we had to wash by hand because they didn't stay put in the dishwasher.
Food
Buy Unpackaged Produce
I will avoid 2 plastic bags each shopping trip by not bagging my produce or using reusable produce bags.
Personal Care
Switch to plastic-free floss
I will switch to plastic-free floss in a reusable container.
Personal Care
Choose sustainable suds
I will replace my soaps, shampoos, conditioners, and lotions with solid bars or refillable options.
Pets
Make cloth piddle pad for puppy potty training
New puppy arrived during frigid temperatures so we are training him to go indoor on cloth pads I made myself. I bought old pillow shams from Hidden Treasures and made absorbing cloth inserts from old towel, left over cotton quilt batting and an old shower curtain, we use toilet paper to pick up and flush the poo and our old diaper pail to soak and wash piddle pads.

DITCH DISPOSABLES AT YOUR PARTY
I will avoid using disposables, such as balloons, table covers and single-use favors as well as disposable plates, cups and utensils for special occasions.
Community
Pick Up Plastic Litter
I will pick up 2 piece(s) of plastic litter each day and dispose of it responsibly.
Pets
Make puppy chew toys from fabric stash
I can make puppy chew toy instead of purchasing and avoid product packaging and use fabric I already own
At Home
Make Green Cleaners
I will make 1 of my own cleaning products (cleaners, detergents, soaps) instead of buying them in new spray bottles each time.

Lona Doolan 2/14/2026 7:39 AMWe love Hibar shampoo and conditioner bars. They work well on our long hair and dry scalp. Nice mild smell too! -
Lona Doolan 2/11/2026 9:01 PMOur puppy Pal quickly took to the pads and they are so easy to clean. We got out our old diaper pail to soak them as they collect. We've started moving them out the door now that it is warm enough for him to be outside and the pads are heavy enough they don't blow away in the wind. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunityHow does the act of picking up litter connect you more to your community?
Lona Doolan 2/11/2026 8:59 PMEvery time I pickup litter off of streets and sidewalks I think of the risks to birds and small mammals, whether it is from eating it or dashing across traffic to check it out, and ultimately fish and invertebrates that will eventually end up eating it when it ends up in the watershed. -

REFLECTION QUESTIONAt HomeWhich household cleaners did you try making? Have you been able to simplify your cleaning routine?
Lona Doolan 2/02/2026 5:38 AMI use Norwex cloth and water for wiping most surfaces, windows and mirrors. For hard water and other hard crusted heavy dirty areas, I mix 1 part vinegar and 1 part Dawn dish soap, spray it on and let it dry. Once it is dry I wipe it off and reuse my sudsy rag to wash nearby floors. -
