Julie's actions
Plastics 101
Bring a water cup to refill instead of a water bottle.
Less plastic used and a cleaner environment.
At Home
Make Green Cleaners
I will make 3 of my own cleaning products (cleaners, detergents, soaps) instead of buying them in new spray bottles each time.
Food
Cook Meals with Zero Plastic Waste
I will prepare 1 meal(s) at home each day without using any items packaged in single-use plastic.
On-the-go
Use Reusable Water Bottles
I will use a reusable bottle and stop purchasing bottled water, saving 1 disposable plastic bottle(s) a day.
At Home
Plan a Garden
I will plan an herb or vegetable garden for next year at my home, workplace, or community garden.
Plastics 101
Know the Numbers
The numbers #1-7 on plastics tell us a lot and can help us be better recyclers. I will learn more about what the symbols on plastics mean.
Plastics 101
Complete a waste audit
I will spend 15 minutes conducting a waste audit- including recyclables and compost- to understand how much plastic waste I create and where I can reduce the most.
Food
Swap the Snacks
I will swap 5 prepackaged snacks for unpackaged fruits or veggies or homemade or bulk items each time we need more.
On-the-go
Skip the Straw
I will keep 1 plastic straw(s) out of the landfill per day by refusing straws or using my own glass/metal straw.

Julie DURR 2/24/2026 9:39 AMWho will emerge victorious in the Wagner plastic challenge? At this point, it seems that Brandon is on track to claim the gold! If he succeeds, who will secure the silver and bronze medals? -
Julie DURR 2/24/2026 9:21 AMLast week of the challenge, what did you learn, and will you keep moving forward or stop when the challenge is over?-
Layl McDill 2/24/2026 10:18 AMI learned that it is hard to go plastic free AND support immigrant owned businesses. I feel so "snotty" when refuse water bottles and ask for things not to be in plastic. This is a hard one. If I brought my own containers for take out I am not sure how they would feel about it.

Julie DURR 2/24/2026 9:09 AMThe challenge has been going well; we have been using reusable containers for our lunches. This helps save the environment and the use of plastic in the trash. -
Julie DURR 2/23/2026 2:52 PMThe plastic challenge is going well; it has its moments where I know we can or could do better. I feel like sometimes doing the right thing isn't always the right thing in the bigger picture. -
Julie DURR 2/17/2026 12:19 PMWe are using glass lunch containers; they may cost a little more starting out but down the road it helps keep the environment clean and plastic free. The only problem I can see is that every once in a while, the glass will chip. -
Julie DURR 2/17/2026 4:17 AMGood morning and Happy Fat Tuesday! I’m curious about the amount of waste we’ll see today in New Orleans. Let’s hope they accepted the plastic challenge and are making progress in keeping our environment clean.-

Charles Schaller 2/17/2026 6:26 AMIs this a weight loss challenge now too? Good grief.... I'm just husky alright (okay maybe a little fat), but Double challenges make me hungry....

Julie DURR 2/16/2026 1:39 PMThis weekend we went to basketball game and brought my own water bottle and so did the whole team. As little kids they are all learning to save the planet one water bottle at a time.-

Julie DURR 2/16/2026 1:03 PMToday was a challenging day for me with the plastic challenge, but I managed to find a work around and not use a plastic bottle, straw or anything wasteful. -
Julie DURR 2/13/2026 4:29 AMI started going through the camper and finding items I could replace with reusable items. No more paper plates, bowls, cups, and plastic utensils. I went and bought all washable items to replace the disposable.-

Julie DURR 2/12/2026 11:29 AMEverything is going well so far. It has made me more conscious of the plastic waste generated daily in the USA and around the world. I believe we should all be more informed about the alternatives to plastic products that we could be using.-
Lily Keire 2/13/2026 3:17 AMWe might have to wait a few years, but eventually we can start a nationwide effort to curb our national habit of single-use bottles and upgrade everyone in the USA with compost pickup as well as mixed recycling carts. Minneapolis is already there, but others will follow.
