Plastics 101

Know the Numbers

The numbers #1-7 on plastics tell us a lot and can help us be better recyclers. I will learn more about what the symbols on plastics mean.

I will replace my synthetic loofah with a natural loofah or wash cloth.

Going well. Purchased more reusable baggies. Not that crazy about them but I will give it a try.

I don't understand how this website works. Am I supposed to "check-in" daily and keep clicking on the same things?

Yes, though you do receive partial credit if you click on the part near the top that mentions that.

Great! Went grocery shopping yesterday and ONLY purchased fresh vegetables. No veggie steamers. However, this made me sad as it will take much more time to prepare meals.

Doing the best I can. I am on a very strict diet following surgery so I will admit that I can't be totally plastic free due to the protein shakes I am prescribed to drink every morning. I do however remove the labels and clean the bottle before I put it into the recycling bin.
I am a YETI snob, LOL and I use it everyday ALL day to refill my water. I love my YETI's and I drink more when I use them.

Has your experience using a reusable product changed greatly from when you used a disposable one? What are the benefits of using a reusable product?

When possible I buy hand soap refills to fill the Ball jar containers with stainless steel pumps. The sad part again is the refills come in plastic bottles. My dream as a kid was to open, "The Refill Store" which housed LARGE stainless steel containers that refilled, laundry soap, dish soap, hand soap, dishwashing soap, household cleaners, toilet bowl cleaner, olive oil, shampoo, conditioners, etc.....never had the money to do it and honestly most people would not bother as it has been instilled in their brain to just go buy a new one..it's sad.

In what ways has your shower experience changed since you stopped using a synthetic loofah?

Still getting used to the all natural loofah I purchased. I sure hope it softens up soon as it is very harsh on my skin.

With the change in your products and routine, do you feel your appearance has also changed, or do your new products achieve the same outcomes?

Yes & no. Sadly it is more cost effective for companies to make there containers out of plastic. I do like that some, like Kenra products use aluminum for their hairspray but our local municipal dump does not recycle those containers.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food
Do an inventory of your kitchen to see how many single-use plastics you've used in the past. What are some low-waste or reusable alternatives to these commonly used products? What would your impact be if you switched all the single-use products from your inventory to reusable? Are there any items where it would be difficult to avoid plastic waste?

I have really been trying to recycle ALL of my Tupperware as I much prefer glass containers. I purchased 2, 64 ounce Ball Mason Jars and stainless steel Mason Jar Pour Spout Lids. I use these for homemade sweet tea or lemon water that I keep in my fridge.
I also purchased a 20 pack of glass baby food storage containers that I use for pudding, homemade yogurt, soup....for freezing or just using to bring to work for lunch. These jars are microwave, freezer & dishwasher safe. Sadly they do have heavy plastic tops but they ARE made from recycled plastic. It's NOT possible to totally get plastic free or we would have to get rid of our vehicles, houses, shoes, clothes (scary), carpet....

I have purchased glass containers & ramekins for my lunch instead of using plastic baggies. What's cool about them is they are dishwasher & freezer safe.
