Food

Skip the cup/Brew at home

Bring my own refillable coffee cup to my favorite coffee joint, then I can skip the styrofoam/plastic coated to-go-cups. Alternatively, I can brew my own coffee at home (if I have time).

I've already learned a lot and it's only Day 5!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Personal Care
In what ways has your shower experience changed since you stopped using a synthetic loofah?

    Tracy Hvezda-Lehtola's avatar
    Tracy Hvezda-Lehtola 2/05/2026 5:30 PM
I still have my synthetic loofah and I'll use it until I can no longer repair it. After that, I won't buy any more synthetic loofahs. I'll use the cotton washcloths I already own.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    At Home
Besides having access to fresh herbs and vegetables, what benefits will you see from growing your own garden?

    Tracy Hvezda-Lehtola's avatar
    Tracy Hvezda-Lehtola 2/05/2026 5:29 PM
By growing my own garden, I will attract pollinators to my yard. The garden will feed my family, but also probably a few birds, rabbits and deer!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    At Home
What are the benefits (to people, animals, and the environment) of purchasing clothes made with natural fibers?

    Tracy Hvezda-Lehtola's avatar
    Tracy Hvezda-Lehtola 2/05/2026 5:27 PM
Clothes made with natural fibers will decompose in a beneficial way when we are done with them. What I call "plastic clothes" will only break down into microplastics that will harm us all. Plus, they're not comfortable to wear! The only point in their favor is that they are cheap to buy. I am willing to spend more on natural fiber clothes that will last longer, be more comfortable to wear, and won't harm the planet.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food
How has buying bulk impacted the quality of the food you receive? Why do you think our society relies more on prepackaged foods rather than buying in bulk?

    Tracy Hvezda-Lehtola's avatar
    Tracy Hvezda-Lehtola 2/05/2026 5:25 PM
Prepackaged foods are more widely available where I live. I wish more stores offered items in bulk like they do in the cities. Our society is all about convenience, so prepackaged foods is what society "tells" us we need. We need to tell them we want something better for ourselves and our planet!

What did you find out about your plastic consumption by using the calculator? What did or didn't surprise you?

I found out that I'm already fairly low on plastic consumption, but there's always room for improvement.
