Kathryn's actions
Plastics 101
Put compostable plastics in the right place
I will make sure any BPI-certified compostable plastic products I use will be disposed of correctly by putting them in my curbside compost/food scraps bin or taking them to a drop-off location and not placing them in the regular recycling.
On-the-go
Use Reusable Bags
I will not accept any disposable bags when making purchases, including produce bags.
On-the-go
Use reusable to-go containers
I will use a restaurant's deposit system for reusable cups and/or takeout containers.
On-the-go
Say no to Styrofoam
Throughout its life cycle, polystyrene (styrofoam) can harm people, communities, and the planet. I will refuse styrofoam whenever I can.
On-the-go
Refill travel toiletries
If traveling, I will reuse my old travel tubes to refill with my soaps or only bring bar soaps with me
On-the-go
Clean 1,2,5 plastics and reuse
I purchased a salad that was available in a recyclable plastic container. Rather than simply recycling after one use, I washed it and plan to reuse it. I use these containers to send leftovers home with guests.
Personal Care
Switch to a natural loofah or wash cloth
I will replace my synthetic loofah with a natural loofah or wash cloth.
Plastics 101
Stop "wishcycling"
Contamination makes the recycling process more difficult. I will review which materials are accepted by local haulers or drop stations in my county and recycle only those items.
On-the-go
Assemble a Zero Waste Kit
I will assemble and/or use a to-go bag with cloth napkins and reusable utensils, containers, and cups to avoid disposable to-go containers and cutlery for 2 of my household members.
Food
Co-op shopping
I will shop at our (not so) local co-op at least once a month, to buy in bulk, using paper bags instead of plastic which are supplied, while also bringing my own mesh bags.

- 5-DAY STREAK
I love shopping at the Stillwater Co-op. People are so friendly and now I can buy in bulk. Certain spices (not all) are available and can be placed in small paper bags. I have begun to use my netting bags for produce, like brussels sprouts, that need some sort of container. But the big winner this week were the local eggs, which I placed in my own egg container, for $4.99 a dozen! -

- 5-DAY STREAK
I just read the article about placing household toiletries in small containers (toothpaste in contact lens holders, bar soap in Altoids tin, shampoo in an old, small bottle). So easy, and a reminder that the small toiletries in hotel rooms can be avoided. They are not easily recycled. -

- 5-DAY STREAK
Zip-lock bags can be used over and over. I now freeze beef and chicken broth in oversize ice cube trays and store these 1-cup portions in a large zip-lock bag in the freezer. When I need the broth, I can easily measure by 1-cup blocks! -

- 5-DAY STREAK
At the annual November Fair Trade event at First Presbyterian Church in Stillwater, I purchased two sets of bamboo cutlery, a bamboo straw, and straw cleaner. In our trip to Tennessee this week, I put the sets in the glove compartment and we used them instead of using plastic.
