Kaitlyn's actions
At Home
Skip the Dryer Sheets
I will replace dryer sheets with a reusable alternative or use nothing at all.
At Home
Buy better gum
I will give up gum or choose gum made from chicle or other plastic-free gum bases.
Food
Buy Unpackaged Produce
I will avoid 2 plastic bags each shopping trip by not bagging my produce or using reusable produce bags.
At Home
Plan a Garden
I will plan an herb or vegetable garden for next year at my home, workplace, or community garden.
Community
SUPPORT BUSINESSES PARTICIPATING IN MNIMIZE
MNimize works to reduce single-use plastic at food service businesses. I will visit a participating location or tell a business I frequent about the resources available to them.
Pets
Clean Up Pet Hair with Reusables
I will use a reusable lint brush or vacuum to remove pet hair from clothes, carpets, and furniture.
At Home
Swap Sponges for Longer Lasting Reusable Options
I will ditch the sponge and use a reusable or compostable option such as a brush, scrubber or dishrag instead.
On-the-go
Visit a packaging-free store
I will visit a co-op or zero waste store to check out my local options for bulk products and plastic-free items.
Community
REDUCE MY MILES DRIVEN
I will cut down the miles I drive to reduce microplastic shedding from tires. Alternatives include riding public transit, walking, biking, carpooling and combining trips.
Plastics 101
Stop "wishcycling"
Contamination makes the recycling process more difficult. I will review which materials are accepted by local haulers or drop stations in my county and recycle only those items.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

REFLECTION QUESTIONAt HomeBesides having access to fresh herbs and vegetables, what benefits will you see from growing your own garden?
Kaitlyn McCarthy 2/10/2025 8:54 AMI think gardening can be a really impactful practice on diligence and patience- it can be therapeutic, so I'm looking forward to sowing some seeds of change! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAt HomeHow difficult (or easy!) has it been for you to cut dryer sheets from your laundry routine?
Kaitlyn McCarthy 2/05/2025 10:44 AMJust ran out of dryer sheets, so I just won't buy more ! So easy -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunityWhat do you enjoy about active transportation? What has been difficult?
Kaitlyn McCarthy 2/05/2025 10:39 AMI enjoy active transportation because it allows me to plan ahead, be intentional about where I go, and feel like I'm participating in my community a bit more. Riding a bike is a work in progress as I learn to navigate and stay safe on the roadways that don't have separated bike paths, which can be intimidating. Riding the bus when I can is fun for me because I don't have to think about navigating traffic- I can just ride!
