Janet's actions
Food
Buy Unpackaged Produce
I will avoid 2 plastic bags each shopping trip by not bagging my produce or using reusable produce bags.
Plastics 101
Know the Numbers
The numbers #1-7 on plastics tell us a lot and can help us be better recyclers. I will learn more about what the symbols on plastics mean.
Plastics 101
Avoid Harmful Plastics
I will avoid buying toxic plastics, including polyvinyl, polystyrene and polycarbonate (#3,#6 and #7).
Food
Shop the Bulk Bins
Each trip to the grocery store I will purchase 2 products from the bulk section using my own containers.
At Home
Extend the Life of Electronics
Manufacturers want you to replace your phones every year. I will keep my phone for at least 3 years and make any necessary repairs or updates to keep it functioning as long as possible.
At Home
WASH COLD, LINE DRY
I will wash my clothing in cold water and hang it to dry to reduce the amount of microplastic shedding and to prolong the life of my garments.
Plastics 101
Read Plastic-Free Challenge emails
I will read through the three emails each week to learn more about plastic and get ideas on how to use less.

REFLECTION QUESTIONFoodHow has buying bulk impacted the quality of the food you receive? Why do you think our society relies more on prepackaged foods rather than buying in bulk?
Janet Meger 2/07/2026 9:56 AMI read someone’s post in the previous zero food waste challenge. She pointed out that in addition to dry items like grains and nuts, it was possible to get fresh produce in bulk quantities also. I started bringing my own paper bags and buying mushrooms this way. I no longer bring home plastic containers with mushrooms or tomatoes.
