Plastics 101
Read Plastic-Free Challenge emails
I will read through the three emails each week to learn more about plastic and get ideas on how to use less.
Plastics 101
Estimate Your Plastic Footprint
I will complete a plastic consumption calculator to learn about my plastic footprint.
Plastics 101
Learn about Local Plastics Recycling
Plastics recycling is real, and it works in the Twin Cities metro area when done correctly. I will spend 20 minutes learning about how to correctly recycle plastics in the Twin Cities and where recycled plastics end up.
Plastics 101
Stop "wishcycling"
Contamination makes the recycling process more difficult. I will review which materials are accepted by local haulers or drop stations in my county and recycle only those items.
Kids
Avoid New Baby Items
I will avoid items marketed to first-time parents and instead use or refurbish items I already have or get them from friends or family.
At Home
Switch to plastic free cleaners
I will change cleaning products to plastic-free options including using laundry sheets, plastic-free dishwasher tabs, plastic-free refillable handsoap tabs, and plastic free dishsoap.
On-the-go
Use Reusable Bags
I will not accept any disposable bags when making purchases, including produce bags.
Community
SUPPORT BUSINESSES PARTICIPATING IN MNIMIZE
MNimize works to reduce single-use plastic at food service businesses. I will visit a participating location or tell a business I frequent about the resources available to them.

REFLECTION QUESTIONPlastics 101What did you find out about your plastic consumption by using the calculator? What did or didn't surprise you?
Laurie Moberg 2/11/2026 7:11 AMI was surprised that my household is doing as well as we are. Always room for improvement, but we've made some big changes over the past few years--lots of cleaning products that are plastic-free, using our own bags for shopping (though shipped items still come in plastic often), no plastic bottles (after baby bottles!), minimizing takeout containers, etc. I still feel like we are using too much plastic and this highlighted some other ways that we could consider changes. Nonetheless, I'm glad to know that our choices are reducing our ecological impact. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONKidsHow does it feel to have a more or less minimalist baby? Do you feel pressure to have specialty items?
Laurie Moberg 2/10/2026 12:04 PMI have appreciated handmedowns for my child since before she was born. Recently, we are encouraging people to think about experiences as gifts for her because we don't need so much stuff, much less plastic, around us.
