Plastics 101
Avoid Harmful Plastics
I will avoid buying toxic plastics, including polyvinyl, polystyrene and polycarbonate (#3,#6 and #7).
Plastics 101
Know the Numbers
The numbers #1-7 on plastics tell us a lot and can help us be better recyclers. I will learn more about what the symbols on plastics mean.
Plastics 101
Complete a waste audit
I will spend 10 minutes conducting a waste audit- including recyclables and compost- to understand how much plastic waste I create and where I can reduce the most.
At Home
Choose Natural Clothing Fibers
I will purchase clothing made with natural fibers, such as cotton, linen, or wool, rather than synthetic fibers like polyester, nylon, acrylic or spandex.
On-the-go
Skip the Straw
I will keep 1 plastic straw(s) out of the landfill per day by refusing straws or using my own glass/metal straw.
Food
Buy Unpackaged Produce
I will avoid 3 plastic bags each shopping trip by not bagging my produce or using reusable produce bags.
Food
Skip Single-Use Plastic for Freezing Food
I will use reusable containers when freezing food and opt for glass or metal when purchasing new containers.
At Home
Plan a Garden
I will plan an herb or vegetable garden for next year at my home, workplace, or community garden.
At Home
REUSE TRASH BAGS BEFORE PURCHASING NEW
I will reuse existing bags such as pet food bags, grocery bags, or online shopping bags to line my trash bins (or go without plastic liners) and offset using as many new bags as possible.
At Home
Ditch the Plastic Dry Cleaning Bags
I will call ahead to ask if I can bring my own garment bag to the dry cleaner or request no bag.

Bina Nikrin 2/26/2025 8:15 AMGoing well, making me think even more about this. For example, I stopped using jugs of laundry detergent some years ago, but recently discovered Blue land Laundry Detergent Tablets which has no plastics in the bag or on the tablets. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONPlastics 101Do some research on polystyrene and polyvinyl. How many items in your house already contain these toxins?
Bina Nikrin 2/26/2025 7:56 AMUntil reading this, I never really "got" why you couldn't reuse plastic water bottles. I thought by reusing I would be doing a good thing (duh). I will definitely make sure my family and friends know it is actually bad for you.
