Jonathan's actions
On-the-go
Use A Reusable Mug or Cup
I will avoid sending 1 disposable cup(s) to the landfill per day by using a reusable mug or bringing my own collapsible cup.
Plastics 101
Read Plastic-Free Challenge emails
I will read through the three emails each week to learn more about plastic and get ideas on how to use less.
On-the-go
Skip the Straw
I will keep 1 plastic straw(s) out of the landfill per day by refusing straws or using my own glass/metal straw.
Plastics 101
Put compostable plastics in the right place
I will make sure any BPI-certified compostable plastic products I use will be disposed of correctly by putting them in my curbside compost/food scraps bin or taking them to a drop-off location and not placing them in the regular recycling.
On-the-go
Use Reusable Water Bottles
I will use a reusable bottle and stop purchasing bottled water, saving 1 disposable plastic bottle(s) a day.

REFLECTION QUESTIONPlastics 101What have you noticed about where you are finding this type of packaging?
Jonathan Riehle 2/27/2026 5:25 AMOur food coop has compostable produce bags and so I use those when available. However, most of the time I don't use bags for produce at all. In the bulk department I chose paper pags over plastice when I can. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONOn-the-goHave you noticed a shift in your community as more messaging about reusable straws becomes mainstream? Cite some examples.
Jonathan Riehle 2/27/2026 5:21 AMMy wife and I always decline straws at restaurants and elsewhwere, and we don't use them at home. So I feel that we never avoid straws because they are never a possibility. -
Jonathan Riehle 2/22/2026 1:04 PMI'm not doing a lot different this year - I made changes last year and have stuck to them. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONOn-the-goGreat job on getting rid of your disposable cup habit! How does it make you feel? Are there any situations where you still struggle to use a reusable mug?
Jonathan Riehle 2/22/2026 1:02 PMI rarely use disposable cup. I keep a travel mug in my car to use at coffee shops for to-go drinks. And I kfavor coffee shops that have reusable cups mugs for in-store consumption.
