Besides having access to fresh herbs and vegetables, what benefits will you see from growing your own garden?

From seeing my mom take on gardening in the last few years, I've seen a few of the benefits. She had excess vegetables that she stored in "the store" (the solarium/basement) and she would just go "shopping" there instead of making a run to the store. She was able to do this well into early winter. Aside from that, she was outside a lot weeding, watering, and doing other gardening activities. Bonus on vitamin D, and movement there!

Another benefit from growing my own garden is possibly saving money on groceries....but I'm not sure how the numbers really crunch down when you do have to buy a lot of gardening supplies to get started, and upkeep.

An additional benefit would being able to give excess to our neighbors. We moved into our neighborhood last year, and have yet to still meet a lot of the people on our street, this could be a great way to connect with them and grow stronger neighborhood bonds.

When is it hardest not to use a plastic bag? What can motivate you to stick to your goal in those cases?

It's very hard not to use a plastic baggie when freezing bulk ground beef. Coincidentally right before the challenge we had just bought bulk freezer baggies. We have a long way before we use them all up, but once we get closer to the end of them, I'll be looking for neoplastic, or at least more reusable alternatives.

My plastic-free challenge is going well. Most of this I already do. At this point it's using up the plastic I had from before the challenge, so I can switch for better alternatives.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food
How easy or difficult have you found this task? Is there a way you could rearrange your freezer to make this work better?

It was pretty easy. We have a pullout drawer bottom freezer, so it makes organizing the fridge a bit harder to be able to see things easier.

I chose to watch The Plastic Problem. I didn't know that the Lake of Ontario is so polluted with plastic, that 100% of the fish in it have microplastics inside them.

What are some of the unexpected benefits of bringing your own lunch?

It's free because I'm not paying for my lunch #girlmath On a serious note, it saves some money, because you are eating food that you already paid for, rather than buying more.

    Community
What are the benefits of a sharing economy? How has joining a sharing economy change the dynamics you have with the stuff you use and with your friends, family and/or neighbors?

A sharing economy can help reduce unnecessary waste, and help keep things that still work well out of landfills. It can also help someone in the community that may have a tighter budget, or lower income, and not have the means to be able to buy a new product. Joining a sharing economy has not changed the dynamics I have with the things I use yet, but I will be keeping it in mind for the future when I no longer have a need for something, or am looking for an item.

    Food
Why do you think these products have so much plastic packaging? Who is the plastic packaging really serving -- the consumer, the producer, or someone else?

I think these products have so much packaging for a couple reasons. To make it easier for the consumer to move, and for their convenience, as well as protect it from damage, and extend the life of the produce. The producer can mark up their price when including packaging, and also support the business who is providing the packaging or materials.
