Plastics 101
Learn about bio-based, biodegradable and compostable plastic
I will learn about what different descriptions and marketing terms mean when used on plastics.
Plastics 101
Follow ONE5C
I found a group on Facebook called ONE5C. It is an organization dedicated to educating the public to make significant climate actions. I subscribe to their Climate Action newsletter and have learned a lot of helpful information.
Plastics 101
Read Plastic-Free Challenge emails
I will read through the three emails each week to learn more about plastic and get ideas on how to use less.
At Home
Extend the Life of Electronics
Manufacturers want you to replace your phones every year. I will keep my phone for at least 3 years and make any necessary repairs or updates to keep it functioning as long as possible.
At Home
WASH COLD, LINE DRY
I will wash my clothing in cold water and hang it to dry to reduce the amount of microplastic shedding and to prolong the life of my garments.
Plastics 101
Estimate Your Plastic Footprint
I will complete a plastic consumption calculator to learn about my plastic footprint.
Food
Shop the Bulk Bins
Each trip to the grocery store I will purchase 5 products from the bulk section using my own containers.
Food
Make Your Own
I will try a new recipe or food preparation method, such as canning, pickling, making yogurt, or baking granola bars or bread.
At Home
Make Green Cleaners
I will make 1 of my own cleaning products (cleaners, detergents, soaps) instead of buying them in new spray bottles each time.
Food
Swap the Snacks
I will swap 5 prepackaged snacks for unpackaged fruits or veggies or homemade or bulk items each time we need more.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

REFLECTION QUESTIONFoodHow does swapping out prepackaged snacks for fresh fruit or veggies or homemade or bulk items benefit your household?
Lisa Walter 2/26/2025 2:38 PMMy family is trying to stay away from junk plastic wrap waste, like from granola bars or dried fruits but . I am saving all of the wrappers in a plastic bottle (an eco brick) to see how quickly it accumulates. It's a good visual reminder to make better choices. -
Lisa Walter 2/10/2025 1:10 PMI watched a video and learned about Eco-Bricks. Super interesting concept that I knew nothing about. Does anyone local (Hennepin County) collect or use these bricks? There is so much junk plastic and foil packaging that is not recyclable and ends up in the landfill. Learn more about Eco-Bricks at ecobricks.org. :o) -
REFLECTION QUESTIONPlastics 101What might you do differently since learning about bio-based, biodegradable and compostable plastic?
Lisa Walter 2/05/2025 11:59 AMI will always opt for a reusable container. Not everything you think is recyclable, learn the differences!-
