I've been successful in avoiding plastic bags while shopping for the most part. We have reduced the amount of plastic water bottles used at work, even though there are still managers who ask for them specifically when they aren't included for lunches and longer meetings.

Moving completely away from any plastic bottles has been much easier than I thought it would be.

It helps that more products have a plastic free alternative these days! Good job!

Besides having access to fresh herbs and vegetables, what benefits will you see from growing your own garden?

Helping the pollinators is very important to me! I also share what is grown with my friends and neighbors. It's a win-win-win situation!

What are some things you can do to avoid using plastic bottles and plastic caps in the first place?

I stopped using plastic water bottles and only use tap and filtered water.

I buy ALL of my clothes second hand! Have been doing that for the last 30 years!

How have you modified your cleaning routine to make sure you aren't using disposable wipes? Are you satisfied with the results?

I have been, and will continue to use, rags that I can rinse out. I don't even have disposable wipes anywhere in my house!

Over the weekend I proved the "poor planning generates more waste" concept when I went to Target to buy some cat food and ended up buying three snack items (because I forgot to eat before I left to run errands) that all used plastic film packaging. I convinced myself that the outer boxboard packaging was the only packaging and completely forgot about the secondary plastic packaging that most snacks come in!

I wanted to share this mistake as a lesson learned to hopefully remind people to plan ahead as it can not only save time and effort but also prevent single-use waste from being generated!

In what ways has your shower experience changed since you stopped using a synthetic loofah?

I had planned on switching from a loofah to bar soap for body wash once I finished my bottle of body wash and the timing just happened to land during this challenge!

I have noticed that I use less soap in general. I also use less water since I had to clean my loofah after using it to make sure it didn't get gross before my next use. I will definitely not go back to using a loofah after this experience and am excited to try out different bars of soap from local businesses :)

What single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) does your household use regularly, and what substitutes are you trying?

We use stainless steel straws, and each family member has a metal or other reusable material water bottle. In addition, we us reusable containers to pack lunches and school snacks (instead of disposable plastic bags).

What are the benefits of a sharing economy? How has joining a sharing economy change the dynamics you have with the stuff you use and with your friends, family and/or neighbors?

I gave away four boxes of books on a neighborhood Buy Nothing group! They were only posted for a few hours before someone claimed them, and were gone the same day.
