Appreciate this challenge for the awareness it raises in me me not only to plastic use, but the use of products and "stuff" in general. Good time to make changes.

    Food
How do you feel about being more involved in the food preparation process? Joyful, overwhelmed, engaged, empowered? What are the benefits of choosing to process or produce your own food instead of buying it pre-processed?

I love making homemade yogurt! Try different starters/yogurt brands, if you haven't already. You will get slightly different flavors with your yogurt at home!

I'm struggling to get my family to be more conscience of buying plastic. Olive oil, for example. No reason to but a plastic bottle when the glass one is on the shelf right next to it. I'm tempted to return the item. Little vent session here. Keep leading by example? Maybe that's the answer. Oof.

My hubbie does stuff like that periodically. When I start to get upset about it, I just tell myself that I will get the better option next time. And even cutting waste by some percentage is better than nothing! Hang in there!

Hang in there! Any progress is good and once you know better, you do better! Leading by example is definitely a great way to start! ;)

What might you do differently since learning about bio-based, biodegradable and compostable plastic?

I was unaware of the intricacies of compostable plastic. I assumed it was a straight forward break down process, but it seems it is more complicated. I'll have to think harder about using replacement products.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    On-the-go
How difficult was this action for you? What made it easy or difficult?

The most difficult part of asking for no bag is to remember to say it before the clerk bags your stuff! Always feel bad telling them after the fact that I do not need the bag.

Ordered compostable sandwich baggies for my husband who tries, but can't seem to give us the plastic Ziploc bags. We will see how the works out. 🤞

Made homemade granola and banana bread. Both are a hit.

Orders reusable "paper towels" to cut back on actual paper towels. I have used reusable napkins for years, so overdue for the next step. Also ordered laundry detergent sheets...not plastic and lighter to ship vs powder detergent.

What did you find out about your plastic consumption by using the calculator? What did or didn't surprise you?

Not surprised at the result. Did better on average than the rest of the world, but lots of room for improvement! Cosmetics/toiletries and food in plastic wrappings seem to be the hardest for our family to swap out for more environmentally friendly packaging.
