A good eye-opener this month to look at my own and my family's plastic use and ways it can be reduced.

Besides having access to fresh herbs and vegetables, what benefits will you see from growing your own garden?

I love fresh and home grown over store bought and I love to wander the farmer's markets to find things that I have not tried before or for things I can freeze and enjoy throughout the year.

This year I attended the Minnesota Horticultural Society's week-long webinar on gardening from the soil up. It was a great foundation to understand how much soil prep, adding compost and mulch, and avoiding using chemicals will pay-off in how well our gardens produce.

Today's topic on homemade cleaners was inspiring and easy to do. I am going to make that transition as I use up existing cleaners!

Did you notice there was also a reference to using a steam cleaner at home too? Nice to see a Wagner product being part of the home cleaning solution to reducing plastic usage!

I love the Stasher silicone bags . I must have a dozen or more, all shapes and sizes. Easy to use, easy to clean, easy to store.
    Usually in April, Earth month,
some or all are on sale.

I will definitely look for sales as April approaches.

Yes, I also switched to silicone bags for frozen foods, for this challenge and it worked great. I always keep cut up onions, herbs, etc in my freezer to make cooking faster, and this got them out of plastic bags

Just a reminder that microfiber cloths are made of plastic & thus petroleum products .

How easy or difficult have you found this task? Is there a way you could rearrange your freezer to make this work better?

This is actually one of the easier items for me as I typically make soups and stews and other items over the winter months and freeze portions in re-usable containers. I also found some pre-measured containers for liquids I might want to freeze like leftover fruit juices, broth or other liquids for cooking/baking. Then I can take out what I need.

Is anyone aware of a "purchase local" option for pet shampoo bars?

What are the benefits (to people, animals, and the environment) of purchasing clothes made with natural fibers?

It feels good to purchase clothes, bed linens, and bath/kitchen towels in sustainable fibers. I have found a lot of towels and bed linens in bamboo and recycled fibers that are soft and work better than non-natural fibers. I still need to work on this for clothing!

What are some of the challenges or benefits you have experienced using reused bags instead of a bag purposely designed to hold trash?

    Deb Rodahl's avatar

Bags are smaller - so they don't fit my waste basket, but am to partially hold them on the top edge of the basket. I tie them when full and just put another on top which helps hold the 2nd bag in place. I am curious which option is better - reuse bags from the store or avoid getting any bags from the store and using purchased trash bags?

We re-use them as much as possible and the 'hardest part' is then determining when they do finally need to be replaced... Usually we do so only if/when something 'sticky/gunky' has now stuck to the bag itself, or someone in my family has thrown something stinky or sharp in it and has now 'punctured' the bag. (Unfortunately on the last one - it being damaged/punctured) we don't realize it until it is too late and then have to wash out the tras can itself!
